An Ocean Grove Christmas Story

There once was a little girl who finally understood the magic of Christmas.  It wasn't just the morning of Christmas opening her stocking or Christmas gifts under the tree.  She found the magic one Christmas Saturday walking down Main Avenue of Ocean Grove with her grandma.  She did this every Christmas to make her grandma happy and hear stories of yesteryear.  But, this time all of the stories and memories her grandmother had, came true for her.  There was a light snow falling and the branches of the trees glistened.  She walked into a new store called Mermaid Yuletide and helped her grandma pick out a new ornament for her tree.  She was filled with admiration and awe of how every tree was decorated.  Her favorite was the Angel tree.  They went to the candy store and her grandma explained for her to pick out anything she wanted.  It took a while, but she was so happy to have a chocolate covered pretzel.  Next, she saw stores in a building that were empty last year.  They couldn't choose which to go to for lunch.  So, they chose the Starving Artist for lunch and her grandmother promised ice cream at Nagle's for desert after.  Then she  exclaimed with joy to go in her favorite store Gingerbreads.  She couldn't keep her eyes off a most wonderful miniature tea set in a wicker basket.  But, focused on a gift for her mom.  She asked if she could get a beautiful handmade dreamcatcher.  She explained she wanted to make all her mom's dreams come true and her grandmother agreed that was a fine idea.  They walked through the Galleria together and she would remember all her grandmother said, so she could bring her dad back, to get the perfect gift for her grandmother.  They went to the hardware store and bought a flag for her dad, because her grandmother remembered how he complained he didn't have one to hang last 4th of July.  That stirred all kinds of memories of the parade in town they would go see each year.   They crossed back the street and went into April Cornell to look at little girl's dresses.  Her grandmother insisted she try on a few and she twirled around with joy as she looked in the mirror and felt like the most beautiful girl in the world.  After they left there Christmas music filled the air coming from DJ's and her grandma picked up some lottery tickets, and she said if I win, I will come back and get you all the dresses you would like.  They went into Favorite Things, Heart and Hearth, Ocean Grove Trading, Gifts by Tina, The Emporium and were full of ideas of what to come back to get for presents for their cousins.  They went to Burbelmiers and picked out some fancy food in a jar to bring to a party and that reminded her grandmother to visit the cheese shop to put it all together in a basket for the host.  They went to the bakery and bought cookies to have for desert on Christmas day.  Then it was on to the surf shop to pick out some more gifts for the cousins.  Finally, they sat down again at Nagle's.  Over their ice cream sundaes they made a plan to come back again.  But, first her grandma asked if she saw the mailbox for Santa and the little girl said she did!   So, they found some paper and the little girl wrote her note to Santa.  As, they walked to the mailbox they were greeted by carolers singing "Joy to the World"!  She made her wishes as she sang along.  She closed her eyes real tight, wished very hard and dropped the letter to Santa into the big red mailbox outside of Mermaid's Yuletide.  As, they walked to the car, they heard the sound of a horse and looked up and saw Kim, their friend from town, in a horse drawn carriage giving tours to all who wanted to see the Christmas lights.  They jumped in their car and her grandmother said she had a map of all the houses and Inns decorated for Christmas.  The little girl put her head back and looked as all the lights glistened and glimmered and she sighed.  Her grandmother asked if she was ok?  She said yes, I just wish I asked Santa for that tea set and a new dress.  And her grandmother said, if you didn't ask for that, what did you ask for?  The little girl exclaimed her wish came true, because all she wanted was a magical Chrismas like her grandma and mom would talk about all the time.  She said "grandma, this was it, today was a very old fashioned Christmas and wishes really do come true".  They listened to the radio and sang Christmas carols all the way home.
